Paper Weaving Apples

Paper weaving apples- fine motor craft for fall. Fun for preschool, kindergarten, or elementary, Bright and colorful activity for back to school!

One of my favorite crafts for kids to do is paper weaving.  It provides great fine motor practice, and you can make some really neat designs!  For this fall craft we decided to make apples!  Ours were red, but you could make yours green or yellow - or make a whole basket full!

Gather Materials For Your Apples

Your supplies couldn't be easier.  You'll need paper in a variety of red patterns.  We used scrapbook paper (ours was from a Christmas pack) but you could also use different shades of construction paper or cardstock, OR have your children paint a few papers with different or patterns of red.  Next, grab some scissors, a pencil, and a printable apple template.  If you want to add a leaf and stem, you'll need some small scraps of green and brown paper, as well as a glue stick.

Prepare Your Materials

Begin by cutting out the apple template.  Trace it on the back of one of your scrapbook papers with a pencil, and cut it out.

Fold the apple in half, vertically.

Try not to make a strong crease.  Cut thin horizonal lines in the apple, leaving about 1/2" on the edges intact, as a border.  Unfold the apple.  For younger children, make the strips wider.

Cut thin strips of your other scrapbook papers.

Begin Weaving

Pick a paper strip and start weaving!  Over, under, over, under.

When you've finished weaving, you can just cut the strips off along the top and bottom.  If you need to, put a dab of glue underneath to secure the strips; if the weaving is tight it should all hold without glue.

If you'd like to add a green leaf and stem, simply trace the shapes onto green and brown paper and glue them in place!
