Invitation to Create: Trim A Tree. Open ended, creative, quick and easy kids paper Christmas craft. Great for color and shape recognition. Perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary.

I couldn't let Christmas go by without setting up another Invitation To Create!  This time, we made sweet little Christmas trees, complete with stars, garland, and ornaments or lights.  I just love seeing how much you can make with simple shapes of paper and glue!  This Christmas tree Invitation To Create activity is so easy to set up, will keep your kids busy while you cross off a few things from your holiday to-do list, and makes a lovely finished product.

Here's how to set it up!

For this Invitation tray, grab some construction paper and cut green triangles in a variety of sizes and shades of green, if possible (most packs don't contain 2 shades of green).  You'll also need brown rectangles (trunks) , thin strips of colored paper (garland), and hole punched little dots (ornaments or lights).  You can easily get the cutting done in 10 or 15 minutes while you watch some TV.  Add a glue stick and some classic star stickers.  Setting the components out in a divided tray or plate helps with the presentation but is certainly not necessary.

Invite your children to the table and have the trays waiting for them, along with a nice stack of quarter sheets of construction paper for them to use as backgrounds.  A little nice Christmas music in the background will help get everyone settled and encourage them to stay longer.

I also always have some scissors and a bag of scrap paper nearby, so that I can cut any extra or special request pieces as needed.

You may have to show a few examples of ideas in order to get the creative juices flowing.  For example, my girls made trees with one triangle until I made one with three triangles stacked on top of one another.   I didn't tell them how to do it, but just sat and made my own which they then used as a model.

All the gluing and manipulating tiny little pieces of paper is great for fine motor development!  As we worked we talked about all of our upcoming Christmas activities, gifts we'd like to make and give to others, and some of their favorite Christmas memories.

I love how my children surprise me so often when I set up this sort of activity for them!  In the picture above, Maggie spotted some scrap paper that had holes punched from it and used it as lace to decorate her tree!

These little quarter sheets of paper are the perfect size to glue on to homemade Christmas cards for your loved ones!
